I have just returned from the World Hydrogen 2024 Summit and Exhibition, which took place in Rotterdam from May 13-15, 2024, and I must say I am impressed! As a China interim manager with a focus on renewable energy, this event was an absolute must for me. Let me take you on a journey through the future of hydrogen technology.
World Hydrogen 2024 was not just a conference – it was a mega-event of superlatives. With over 15,000 decision makers, energy ministers and CEOs from more than 150 countries and 500+ exhibitors on 5 floors, it was the biggest and most important global hydrogen event of the year [source: 1]. When I entered the exhibition halls, I immediately realized: this is where the heart of the hydrogen industry beats.
It is no coincidence that World Hydrogen 2024 took place in Rotterdam. The Dutch port city has established itself as a hub for the hydrogen economy. In cooperation with the Dutch government, the province of Zuid-Holland and the city of Rotterdam, the venue provided the perfect platform for global hydrogen deals and project developments [source: 1].
The crème de la crème of the hydrogen industry met here. CEOs and executives discussed the latest trends and strategies. I had the opportunity to speak with some of the most influential people in the industry – an invaluable asset to my work as an interim manager.
The exhibition area was gigantic. Innovative technologies, new products and services for the entire hydrogen value chain were presented [source: 1]. I was particularly impressed by the advances in electrolysis technology and fuel cells.
A particular focus was on the opportunities and challenges for hydrogen projects in Africa. As someone who often commutes between China and Europe, it was fascinating to see how the African continent is positioning itself as a potential hydrogen powerhouse.
The latest technological developments were presented on two stages. From production and storage to transportation – here you could experience the future of hydrogen technology at first hand.
The presentation of the World Hydrogen Awards was a highlight of the event. It was inspiring to see how innovative companies and projects were recognized for their contributions to the hydrogen economy.
The visits to the hydrogen projects in the port of Rotterdam were an absolute highlight. Here I was able to see with my own eyes how theory is put into practice. The scaling of hydrogen technology is impressive.
The conference covered a wide range of topics that are crucial for the future of the hydrogen economy:
Decarbonization of sectors that are difficult to reduce: There is enormous potential for hydrogen here, particularly in steel and cement production [source: 3].
Renewable hydrogen production: The advances in electrolysis technology are impressive. More efficient and cost-effective electrolysers will revolutionize the production of green hydrogen [source: 3].
Financing hydrogen projects: A critical point for scaling the technology. I was able to gain valuable insights into new financing models.
Sustainable mobility and transportation: hydrogen fuel cell vehicles were a big topic. The possibility of powering buses, trucks and even the maritime and aviation sectors with hydrogen opens up enormous opportunities [source: 3].
Alternative hydrogen carriers: Research into organic liquid hydrides or ammonia as more flexible and cost-effective transportation options for hydrogen is fascinating [source: 3].
Standardization, certification and regulation: An often overlooked but crucial aspect for the global acceptance and trade of hydrogen.
Global hydrogen supply chains: As an interim manager with a focus on China, this was particularly interesting for me. The development of international supply chains will be crucial for the success of the hydrogen economy.
World Hydrogen 2024 showed me that hydrogen is much more than just hype. It is a key technology for the energy transition and offers enormous opportunities for companies and investors. I was particularly impressed by the versatility of hydrogen – from energy storage to transportation and industrial use.
As an expert on China, I see great potential for cooperation between Europe and Asia in the field of hydrogen. The technological advances that I saw at World Hydrogen 2024 will undoubtedly also influence the Chinese market.
World Hydrogen 2024 was more than just a conference – it was a glimpse into the future of our energy supply. The dynamism and optimism I experienced there is infectious. It is clear that hydrogen will play a central role in our future energy mix.
For me as an interim manager, there are huge opportunities here. The expertise I gained at World Hydrogen 2024 will help me to support companies as they navigate this exciting new era in the energy industry.
I can hardly wait for the next World Hydrogen Summit and Exhibition. Until then, I will be incorporating the knowledge I have gained into my work and eagerly following further developments in the hydrogen industry. One thing is certain: the future of energy is green – and hydrogen will play a key role in this.
